Boroughbridge Lions Help Ukulele Group

Here’s our community development worker Kirsty excitedly receiving a giant cheque from Boroughbridge Lions towards our Boroughbridge ukulele group.

The ukulele group was set up as part of our outreach work in the area and is a collaboration between us and Orb Community Arts (as part of our Route one to Wellness partnership). David and Andy from Orb lead the sessions with Kirsty facilitating the organisation of the group, and Boroughbridge Churches kindly providing the venue for the group.

Initially running for ten sessions only, the group has been so popular that Orb decided to continue the group for a further ten sessions. Boroughbridge Churches again offered to host the group, but with the rising cost of living, needed some help with the heating costs for the Church. This generous donation from Boroughbridge Lions has gone towards meeting these costs, allowing the group to continue. We hope that in the long term the group will continue as an independent group, building on their new skills.

The ukulele is a great beginner friendly way to learn an instrument, with playing an instrument being shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Joining a group to learn an instrument is also a great way to both socialise and learn a new skill.

See the group in action at Orb’s Winter Celebration here!

This was their first performance as a group, such great progress after only ten sessions!

In other news, our outreach service in Boroughbridge has a new location and can be found in the Community Room at Morrisons Boroughbridge on Tuesday afternoons. Please see the outreach page of our website if you would like to make an appointment.
